Two Times Resurrection
About 80 years ago in Korea, there was a monk called Dong-goo who became a monk in childhood and studied high degree of sutras, keeping disciplines strictly. He became an instructor in youth, but died from a desease. After death he saw twin windows and got out of the place. Then the sound of beating wooden bells were heard very loud, so he came back. It was 9 p.m. of the day when he resurrected, and his body was already treated as a corpse at dawn that day. However, he said, "I don't seem to live longer. Even if I die again, please don't strike wooden bells and keep quiet." It was not long before he died again and he saw the same twin windows as those he had seen before. When he got out, there was no sound of wooden bell, but it was noisy as before. When he was passing the garden in front of the door for quite a time, some one came to him and bowed, saying "I am Lee living in the west country and I hear that you have kept disciplines strictly and learned high degree of sutras, so I would like to lead you to Buddha." Following him for a time, he saw a great palace beaming golden light. It was constructed with solid gold. The man explained that it is Quiet-treasure Palace where Buddha always stays and preachs. Dong-goo was very happy and followed him toward it. When they were close to it, they heard an old monk shouting and waving a stick behind them from a distance, "Where are you going ? Come here right away, won't you ?" Dong-goo told his company that he would see the old monk off and come back shortly. When he got to the old monk, he had to follow him, being suppressed by his dignity. Thus he came back to the place where he saw the twin windows and he found out that he had been dead for 3 days and his body was already shrouded. 3 days after he got alive, he could tell other people the story he experienced after death. One of the people listening to his story said, "If you had not met me, you would have become a magpie. The golden palace was a magpie nest." In front of the temple, there was a large old tree on top of which there was a magpie nest. The old monk told them to look into the nest. Then, one bad egg of magpie was found among other eggs in the nest. The man was the great monk called Mooyong, who lived the contemporary time with Kyungheo. It is said that when the two met each other, they stayed 3 days at a water mill, polishing each other's dharma and prohibiting others' access.
Since then, monk Dong-goo had never kept sutra nor taught it to others.
